Title GWEN [Ground Wave Emergency Network] / No-GWEN Alliance Records; c. 1987 - early 1990s
Scope & Content The GWEN/No-GWEN Alliance collection consists of correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, press releases, legal documents, organizational records, posters, and other materials and ephemera related to the activities of the No-GWEN Alliance (sometimes described as the No-GWEN Alliance of Little Compton, Tiverton, and Westport), a grassroots citizen organization created in 1987 to oppose the construction of GWEN (Ground Wave Emergency Network) communications towers in area towns, including a proposed site off of Long Highway in Little Compton, RI. The site is now part of the Simmons Mill Pond Management Area, owned by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
GWEN was a planned and partially constructed U.S. Air Force program to establish a network of low-frequency radio communication towers across the nation, designed to maintain military communication in the event of a nuclear war.
