West Island, Sakonnet, R.I. |
Description |
Black and White photomechanical postcard. Photograph of West Island at Sakonnet Point in Little Compton RI. West Island was purchased in 1864 by Preston H. Hodges and others to form an "association for angling and shooting purposes". The West Island Club operated until 1906 when the island was sold to private owners. The buildings were burned to the ground by arsonists in 1934. Any remaining debris and topsoil on the island was swept away in the 1938 hurricane. In 1949 the island was purchased by Jessie Lloyd O' Connor for the purpose of protecting its natural beauty. She donated West Island and East Island to the Sakonnet Preservation Association in 1983. The complete story of the West Island Club by Nicholas B. Wainwright is contained in the Bulletin of the Newport Historical Society, Number 166, Spring 1977, Vol. 50, Part 2. |
